NEW Nestle Milo bar

Remember back in the eighties when spiral perms seemed like a good investment, the movie ‘Cocktail’ was considered high cinema and Jimmy Barnes ruled the airwaves?  Oh, wait he still does, on Fogey FM, doesn’t he…..

Oh well.  One of the highlights of that time was the release of the original Milo bar.

The reason it was so good because it was just Milo – the powdery stuff you mix with milk – compressed into a couple of rectangular blocks and coated in chocolate.  Simple.  Perfect.  Delicious.

Since then it’s been tarted up to resemble something that’s about as comparable to Milo the drink as Geoffrey Edelston is to good taste and common sense.

new nestle milo bar bittenThis latest version strays even further.  It has a Milo Choc Brownie base (what the….?  Who on this planet makes brownies with Milo?), then a layer of caramel and Crunchy Milo Balls that are covered in milk chocolate.

It tastes really nice, but that’s not the issue.  The issue is that it is NOT a Milo Bar.  It is a pleasant chocolate bar with a stodgy cakelike base, some sweet caramel and crispies in it.  Even if the marketing department wanted to get creative with the truth, in reality the closest thing they could call this bar is ‘Inspired by Milo’.  To be brutally honest, it should be called something else entirely.  Brownie Crispy Caramel Bar or somesuch.

We all have a tin of good old Milo in our pantry and the last time I checked, they didn’t have a layer of brownie or crispies in them.  It is powdery and a bar called ‘Milo’ should celebrate this and use that wonderful powder and seal it all in with chocolate.  Like they used to.

After all, the fun of Milo was sneaking in when Mum wasn’t looking and spooning it out of the tin and directly into your mouth, wasn’t it?

Absolutely, Milo is best in its purest form. I became a pro at maintaining only a centimetre over a full glass of milo so that Mum never knew how much I was gobbling up in one go, even if she was “looking”. Why won’t they just bring the original bar back?!

I agree completely with you Hannah, I used to do the same and now my son does it too.

I wish to God that they’d bring back the original Milo bar – I loved those things! :(

There’s an online petition here: http://www.gopetition.com.au/petitions/bring-back-the-original-milo-bar.html

…but it’s pretty old and not even 1,000 signatures on it *sob*

I liked the original Milo bar too, but had to make sure I was at home to eat one, so I could brush off the crumbs and brush my teeth straight away. (because I’m a front-of-mouth chewer, due to a lot of missing back teeth.)
I haven’t bought one in ages, so didn’t notice the new one, which I won’t be buying. (If I want caramel, I’ll get a Mars bar.) I spoon milo powder onto vanilla icecream too and make milo sandwiches for snacks sometimes.

Definitely have to agree… the original Milo bar was great… the latest version while it tastes okay is just not the same!!!

Haha, I remember back in my younger days when I scooped too large a scoop of Milo into my mouth and I coughed. I got sticky Milo on my face, including in the nostrils and all over the counter!

As a teenager I would love Milo on hot, buttered toast. But enough about my problems. As an adult I stopped enjoying Milo. I’ve had one of these Milo bars sitting in the fridge since Christmas, when it had arrived as part of a chocolate gift basket. After reading your review yesterday I decided to finally have some. I have to say I didn’t really like it. No distinct flavour of Milo, no distinct flavour at all really. Kind of boring. Won’t be going out of my way to have another one.

Christine, I clicked on your link and signed the petition but it’s nearly four years old now and at least one version of the Milo Bar behind that they’re petitioning against.

And for everyone else, my mate Tam – she of the Brigadeiros recipe – buys a smallish tin, rips open the seal, pours milk straight in, puts the lid back on and shakes it for a while and then eats it whilst she’s in the bath. Yes, on the worst night of that special time that rolls around every month!!

Well I must say that the original milo bar was very expensive to make…This new brownie style bar still has that chocolately malty flavour which is sort of like milo….Even though it’s not as good as the original,it’s still a yummy little product….

Have you tried making your own milo style bar? Think of an ice cube tray/cling wrap/melted chocolate/milo/melted choc….messy but yum !

I was talking to my husband (age 56) about eating spoonfuls of Milo from the tin. I was surprised to hear that he had never done that. So, of course I had to make him try it. And yes, he did like it.

Jo, you are a classic! You do realise that you’ve now created a monster, and every time you hear your husband head into the kitchen he’s actually going to wolf down some milo, don’t you??

You think you are alone in the world and then you read this blog!!! I thought Nestle had done consumer research = the change of the Milo bar. Obviously not!
BRING BACK THE REAL MILO BAR!!!
I crave a milo bar every time I stand in front of the confectionery isle… then cringe at the sight of the new wrapper and whats inside :(

Hi Choc Goddess, I couldn’t believe that my husband had never eaten milo straight from the tin. He’s good, I can trust him, he won’t sneak any out of the tin.
